Rhymes and Rants..

Childish stuff …but cute….I am amazed not too many people know these little rhymes/ concepts…just putting it here…tell me if you have heard of it…:-) I dont remember where and when I have heard these rhymes and rants…but know them from the time I was a kiddo….

One of the following holds true depending on the number of Mina’s (those little black birds) you see…..

One is for sorrow

Two is for Joy

Three is for a letter

Four is for a boy/toy

Five is for silver

Six is for gold

Seven is for secrets you have never been told!

This little poem is something you have to say and make a wish when you see the first star each evening

Star Light oh Start Bright

The first star I see tonight

I wish I may I wish I might

Get the wish I wish tonight

Make a Difference…

One day a man was walking along the beach when he noticed a figure in the distance. As he got closer he realized the figure was that of a boy picking something up and gently throwing it into the ocean.

Approaching the boy, he asked, “What are you doing?”

The youth replied, “Throwing starfish back in the ocean. The sun is up and the tide is going out. If I don’t throw them in, they will die.”

“Son,” the man said, “Don’t you realize there are miles and miles of beach and hundreds of starfish? You can’t possibly make a difference!”

After listening politely, the boy bent down, picked up another starfish, and threw it into the surf.

Then smiling at the man, he said,”I made a difference for that one!”

This was a forward I got on e-mail and I really liked it…but instead of fwd it to everyone I thought I will put it on my blog so I wont loose it in a mail trail. Till Google Wave becomes a norm….i will have to use blogs like this to share interesting things and yet not loose them in the mail mass!

Plan to use this story to inspire the college volunteers of my school teaching  program with Dharma Bharti Mission… Ya I know I have not yet written about this  new initiative of mine….I plan to do it soon!

Till then….keep reading and get inspired to make a difference…however small it may be!  And  Plz do write comments on my posts to inspire me! Will really appreciate it!

24 Hours of Dhammal!

Family vacation in Khandala…short.. sweet trip….looking back I realized that it just lasted 24 hours…..reached the Khandala Bunglow at 5 in the evening  Saturday and left at 5 in the evening…but those 24 hours were action packed and a whole lot of fun…..we barely slept 3 hours so it was 21 hours of Dhamal….:-)

And what did this Dhammal include…..! Read on…Don’t have picture to make people jealous ( Yeah…I like to put up snaps to show off on all the fun I have had in various trips!) so you’ll will have to make do with only text on this one!

Gossip!! now this is always the best part of any family trip and we had our share of that….with some non family surprise eye candy material added to our house party list the gossip and the giggles were galore!

Lazy stroll in Khandala gali’s : J A must have ingredient for all ‘hill station trips’…extended gossip session in different venues!

Games Games Games! : We are the GAME family…every time we meet we have to PLAY something…..afterall there is only so much you can gossip and enjoy…playing brings out the child in you and it is a whole lot of fun….if you don’t play when you meet family and friends…..trust me you are loosing out on a lot lot of fun…..(try to bribe me to invite you to one of my extended family outing… and you will see!!

Game 1: Guessing : Two Teams…unlimited  Guessing cards…. limited time…leads to total chaos!! Basically  You have to make your team guess words from cards without  using the ‘Taboo’ words on the card. Words cannot do justice to amount of fun  fighting and involvement this game evoke from people of all ages groups ( our youngest member was 21 an the oldest would be about 65!)

Game 2: DumbSharades: Now I am sure I don’t need to explain what this is ….yeah it was the usual….with acting and guessing and chaos and  cheating and made up movies etc … ‘Shambnam Mausi’…now that cant really be the name of an actual movie can it!??

Game 3: I LOVE YOU : This was my internet discovery some years back ( yeah I do sometimes scout for party  games on the internet! One of my potential career switches is to be a party planner!) and not it has become one of our standard family party games…everybody sits on chairs in a circle with one person standing in the middle of the circle is the denner. The denner walks up to anyone in the circle and asks them  Aunty/Uncle/Do you love me  and they have to answer in a YES or a NO. If the answer is YES the denner asks them why and they have to give a concrete reason like because you are wearing watch ! ;-) ….and everyone in the circle wearing the watch has to get up and move places and the denner had to catch a seat! If the person says NO then every body in the circle has to RUN and change places!

This game is super good fun…..people would fight to get a seat…push… fall…..we even ended up breaking a chair while playing ‘I love you’….yeah it can get rough and seem like a war to someone who is sitting down listing to the commotion we were causing….but trust me it make you laugh…makes you happy….and make you love each other even more!!

Terrace party with good food and drink…The normal party stuff…..won’t give u the name of all the dishes but will leave it to your imagination…..all I will say was that it was good stuff and food and drink always add a cheer to the party…it’s a pity some parties have only food and drink to cheer people up!

MIDNIGHT TREK : Yeah Yeah you read it right….MID NIGHT TREK….not stroll….with Family ( just to remind you aged 21 years to 65 years!) We Started out 12 in the night….10 of us squeezed into the Innova… drove 20 kms from  where we stayed..walked/climbed/trekked 2 and a half hours though the rocks, the grass the trees… under the moonlight to reach the top of an old ruined dilapidate fort…

Despite a lot of protests and threats of let us turn back we actually managed to reach the top at 3 in the morning….the breeze was amazing….the view was fantabulous….a birds-eye view of Amby Valley …and the icing in the cake was the our discovery of an abandoned temple perched on a serene lake right there in the middle of nowhere on the top! We sat there in the still of the night at the temple by the lake in the moonlight in had chai…( Yeah we carried chai in the thermos with  little plastic glasses!)

Thank GOD we managed to reach down safely … It was really quite crazy….with a group  of parents/uncles/ aunties/non sporty cousins to attempt trekking in the middle of the night….Indeed an experience of lifetime!

Reached home and crashed out by 6 in the morning!

Game 4: Lagori I am sure everyone has played this as kids…..make two teams…stack up 7 stones….hit the stack and break it with a rubber ball and the team has to rebuilt it while the opposite team trys to hit them below the waist with the ball!

Not one of our usual games…but then our usual parties don’t last 24 hours and are not in intesting places like khandala….:-) this was indeed fun…people were actually playing in their night clothes with rubber chapples….too much trouble to get up and have a bath and get ready in the morning….we are on vacation plz!

Game 5: Spoons : Card game…..whats the fun without some card games….:-) really simple but too much trouble to explain in details….basically when someone screams spoons because their cards are right…everyone has to grab spoons from the middle of the circle…there is one spoon less then person and the person who does not get a spoon is out…..if you ever play this game….be carful that the people around the circle don’t have long nails or you will end up with scratches like the poor boys round the circle had to endure….

Game 6: Name Game: Another all time favorite  family card game..this is about concentration …speed….alertness….tests how loud you can scream and of-course luck!

Bottom Line…What a trip!!…..Yeah believe it or not we did ALL of this and some more stuff….all in jus 24 hours!!

Thank you god for such a wonderful extended family…..Hope we can plan many more such outings!!

Two States by Chetan Bhagat

Super Cool Book….a must read…….made me laugh out loud…..made me smile to myself……brought tears to my eyes…now not too many books have done that..!!

The Book is is four parts major parts….

Ahemdabad: Boy meets Girl….

Aanaya….the hottest girl in the IIMA….who 13 IIT boys have proposed to in the first week at collegeand Krish……who Aanaya somehow felt can be a ‘friend’ also so much falls in love with her but does not want to be the 14th one to be heartbroken…

After regular complications….things fall in place!

Chennai:  Boy meets girls parents….

And takes 6 months to convince them…!! Crazy…Hoe did he have the patience! The cutest scene( yeah he writes so well that it feels like a movie!) is the one where he proposes…..wont tell you much about it to keep the suspense…..but I had tears in my eyes…I was so touched! The book is worth reading for this one little scene!

After regular and irregular complications….things fall in place!

Delhi: Girl meets boys parents…..

Now this part could have been handled better….the girl manages to impress the boys parents….but how she does it could have been better. Since it is written by a man..The boy comes looking oh so sweet in this part of the book also…

After regular and irregular complications….things fall in place!

Goa: Boys parents  meet girls parents meet….

After regular and irregular complications….THINGS FALL apart!

What a tragedy…..after all the effort…it is all over…..

Delhi: Chennai: Dehi: Chennai:

Finally things work out…yeah it had to be a book with a happy ending….thank god for that……!!

Overall a very very nice read…everything is a little exaggerated….but then that is what makes it fun! I liked the way the father and son relationship is depicted in the book…that too got me to tears at some places!  As for the laughs they are all over the book…..his wedding is so funny….poor thing!

It is like a super hit  bollywood movie…it has it all….the romance… the suspense…the drama…the comedy….full paisa vasool!

On the Way to the Wedding By Julia Quinn

It’s about love…about romance…about ‘moments’ when you realize…feel… this is Love….the protagonists fall in LOVE by just looking at the person….they hear music… something inside them flutters….( all bullshit na!! but does that really happen….umm..think about maybe it does!) and then they see someone else…and the same damn thing happens again…they are confused!! Finally they meet someone….who makes their toes tingle…flutter deep inside….they feel the excitement…..and yet they feel comfortable…like they have known the person all their life…is this LOVE!

Is love….the tingle…the excitement and the comfort all felt together for the same person….!!??!!

So have you had any of those ‘moments’? The book makes you think…..reflect…..go back in time….try to recollect your ‘moment’ and wonder….. Excitement indicates infatuation/attraction….Comfort is with friendship…..LOVE has to be a combination of the two…Does this perfect combo exist….I hope it does …somewhere out there…in the real world..

The book is set in a time when there were Dukes, Lords, Dutchees. Erls….social order….Balls…etc….a time very far from our current time….but the feelings are the same! The last part of the narrative is very very  filmy…..actully the whole book is filmy but the last part is full of twists…..boy finally after much confusion realizes that this is the girl for him….the girl agrees after much ado…..normally that would be the end of the story…..but Lo behold….the story has just began…there are twists….and turns….and twists again….eveytime you think it is done….there is another twist! Even though you know deep inside this is one of those books that HAVE to have a happy ending…you are still intrigued to see what is going to happen next….

The book kept me awake 2 nights till I finished it……so I guess it was gripping and not bad… but I guess I like cliché filmy love stories….so read it at your own discretion….!

‘Baby’ and ‘Bevadi’…Car’s in my Life!

My Indica is named  ‘Baby’…cause it is nice little car that I am quite fond of… its “My Baby”, hence the name.

My bro’s car is an Petrol drinking big car and is a Guzzler of fuel and money….as compared to my economical Diesel drinking ‘Baby’ so I have coined the name “Bevadi” for it and everyone reluctantly agrees to it…

Friday afternoon…one of my colleague in office tells me….did you hear the good news….the watchman called and said your tire is punctured….got down requested a driver to change to stepney tire and got home without incident…

Saturday night…2:30 in the night after our Diwali party at cousins place….the front tire goes phat again!! Middle of the night….on the highway..on top of a flyover….. ….just 2 women…me and mommy and my baby bro.. ..and NO stepney tire….managed to call people in the other car….and they came back…helped us to wake the tire repair wala and we reached home at 3:30 in the night…

Apparently all four tires of my ‘Baby’ have holes and hence they keep getting punctured…L… they have to be replaced…..any anything that has to be replaced is a research project undertaken by my dad….so till the project is done….I cannot take ‘Baby’  for a ride…cause if I get stuck alone on the highway at night…there will be panic….!

As for ‘Bevadi’…she has some neural problems which need to be fixed…..the lights inside switch on without reason….switching the right indicator leads sometimes to the left indicator coming on…sometimes both and sometimes none…!! WTH….wonder if it is a neural problem or ‘gaadi me bhoot aagaya hai! (Is the car possessed by a ghost!)  Now that is a scary thought!!

Bottom line…both Baby and Bevadi are not working…. what a tragedy! :-(

Smile Poem

Smiling is infectious,
you catch it like the flu,
when someone smiled at me today,
I started smiling too.

I passed around the corner
and someone saw my grin
when he smiled I realized
I`d passed it on to him.
I thought about that smile
then I realized its worth,

A single smile, just like mine
could travel round the earth.

So, if you feel a smile begin,
don`t leave it undetected
Let`s start an epidemic quick,
and get the world infected!

PS: This is NOT an orginal piece of work…..saw it somewhere online…liked it…and copy pasted it!

that thing called LOVE by Tuhin Sinha

The tag line of the book says….An Unusual Love Story and it indeed is unusual…unexpected…and about convoluted lives of the protagonists……no one is really really happy ….even in the end…
I normally don’t like books with sad endings….and at the end of this one was not really happy neither was it sad…..it was just and ending which denoted life goes on……
It’s about a guy who is engaged to some girl his parents want him to get married to…but falls in love with a married lady with a kiddo….it is a mess…..and not only the life of the main protagonist mayak is a mess….everyone around him also has messy confused lives….
Overall the book is very engaging….it is set in Mumbai….you can picture the Moccha…the Juhu Circle…the Juhu beach…..as you read about it….but not sure what I am feeling reading it…it is not a ‘feel good’ book for sure….its is almost disturbing….

PS:(22nd September): I have been thinking about it wondering what about the book disturbed me….I think it was because it is about TOXIC relationships..

TOXIC relationships are those relationships that are doomed….you cant live with it….you cant live without it…you know it is bad for you…but yet you are so addicted to it..you need a major detox routine to get out of it…and yet it is so easy to get back into it….back into the downward spiral….towards destruction……its sad……:-(

Spread The Smile Flu!!

Last week I drove into the petrol pump and there were 3 cars waiting to be refueled in lane One and 3 cars waiting to be refueled in lane two…Now I had half a mind of driving off and hoping that the fuel lasts me the day (if required I will go without air con..no that is crazy in the heat) when the attendant at the Pump goes…. “Mam chalo aapko phle bhar dete hai last lane mein laga lo”. The last lane is normally used as a service lane an not normally for vehicles to fuel up. I drove into the last lane, re-fuelled.and drove off!!

Now what did I do deserve special treatment at the petrol pump….???

Nothing except that…I normally smile….and said Thank you every week when I came to this petrol pump to fuel!
(The boys say you get away with it cause you are a girl but I vehemently disagree that it is a gender bias)

Simple is’nt it? Smile and say thank you!

But how many of us actually do that?? How many of us smile at people who are supposedly in a lower socio economic background??Our Bai’s …the waiters….the watchmen…..do we ever even smile at them? Saying thank you would be a far fetched thing!
Forget people in the lower socio-economic background, how many of us make it a point to Smile genuinely at our classmates, colleges and our bosses when we pass by them? How many of us smile at strangers??
Believe me, I do that quite often and it is really not stupid almost every-time I have an eye contact with anyone, in the lift, people I don’t know in office, people in the canteen, I smile and trust me no one has ever frowned back at me and almost everyone smiles back!

There are studies which have found that when you smile, you release hormones called serotonin and endorphins, which are “happiness hormones” these can improve your energy, make you feel good, improve your immune system, and reduce any stress or pain you may be feeling!

When you smile at someone it tells them you like them and you are happy to see them. They smile back at you and the happiness hormones are released in their body, they feel good, you feel good, the positivity in the air increases and is so damn simple!!

If any of you think I am exaggerating, I guess there is no substitute for experience so just try it for a day. You have absolutely nothing to loose. Infact in the Smile Currency the more you give the more you get!
Smile at everyone you come across, the watchman, the lift man, your college, your boss, the guy you bump into the gym, the people you share the lift with. Trust me people WILL NOT think you have gone mad and they will DEFINITLY smile back at you because you see you can never give a smile away…it always comes back to you. The more you give the more you get!!

I am responsible for spreading the Smile Flu! I have experienced the ‘Power of Smiling’! And I want your help to spread Smile Flu by propagating “World Smile Day”!
Did you know that the first Friday of October is Celebrated as “World Smile Day”.
To Celebrate this day is extremely cost effective…All you have to do is Smile at everyone you See that day and wish them “Happy World Smile Day!!”
Lets all propagate “ World Smile Day” and be brand ambassadors to spread happiness in the world!
What Say……Will you be pioneers of the Smile Revolution!!????
It is said

Smiling is infectious,
You can catch it like the flu.
Someone smiled at me today,
And I started smiling too.

So people lets curb Swine Flu and Spread Smile Flu!!
And you know what the world always looks brighter from behind a smile…Try it!

PS: Sorry…the content is almost the same as my earlier post…(and two ealier posts) this is just a cleaner version…I want to use it as a article for my rotaract bulletin

The Power Of..

Hey People…..This is a speech I plan to give on my Toastmasters Meeting this Friday morning…..it still required major fine tuning…..so any feedback would be very valuable….Plz Plz….quick feedback to improve the speach!
The Power Of…
Good Morning!!
How many of you’ll want to be happy?
How many of you’ll want to make the world better place?
How many of you’ll think that you’ll don’t have the time and the money and ability to make the world a better place?
In the next few minutes…I am going to help you re-discover the POWER you have to become happier yourself and make the world a better place…
I am going to share my experience with the ‘Power of Smiling’….explain my concept of “World Smile Day” and…and request your help and idea’s to Propagate World Smile Day!
Last week I drove into the petrol pump and there were 3 cars waiting to be refueled in lane One and 3 cars waiting to be refueled in lane two…
Now I had half a mind of driving off and hoping that the fuel lasts me the day (if required I will go without air con..no that is crazy in the heat) when the attendant at the Pump goes….”mam…..chalo aapko phle bhar dete hai” last lane mein laga lo”. Now how many of you’ll will walk out of this room try this for a day???
Remember Smile is the most inexpensive way to improve your looks….. and there are 100’s of languages in the world…..but everyone Smiles in the same language…..
Now I have experienced the ‘Power of Smiling’ … I have felt good….I have made friends….I have gotten out of tight spots…..and I wanted it to share it with eveyone….and so I decided to write about it…and then speak about it….and while I was writing….it suddenly occurred to me….that we should maybe celebrate a “World Smile Day”!” and I though I would be the poioneer for this brilliant idea of “World Smile Day”…I was about to file for a patent for my brilliant concept when something prompted me to check google for “World Smile Day” and Lo behold….. to my utter disappointment…….World Smile Day already exists!
Did you know…“World Smile Day” is celebrated on the 1st Friday of October…??? Well now you know….!! The concept of World Smile day is to “Do an act of kindness and make a Person Smile”
I would suggest let us make it simpler…. “ Smile at everyone you see and wish them Happy World Smile Day!!”
Will You help me to propagate “ World Smile Day” and be my brand ambassadors to spread happiness in the world???
If yes….what do you need to do?
1. ‘Smile’ : Actions speak louder than words….and experience is the best teacher!
2. Share the Concept : Write/Blog/ Talk about ‘World Smile Day’ and spread awareness and make the 1st Friday of October….as famous as Friendship day or Valentines day!
3. Celebrate ‘World Smile Day in various groups you are part of like your team at work, Toastmasters Club, Maitree, Music Club, Rotaract etc!
4. Help to reach out to stake holders like media, greeting card companies who have vested interests in us celebrating anything new!
What Say……Will you be pioneers of the Smile Revolution!!????

Smiling is infectious,
You can catch it like the flu.
Someone smiled at me today,
And I started smiling too.

So people…lets curb Swine Flu and Spread Smile Flu!! And you know what the world always looks brighter from behind a smile… Try it!
