Yet another B’day……..another meaningless milestone in the journey of life……and I am chronologically a year older but don’t fell very different…don’t think I look any different either….but the fact of life is that I am yet another year older!!

B’day’s are special days…..and they are very very exciting till the time you reach your 21st B’day….. and then the excitement of yet another  b’day gradually tappers down…..

Maybe by the time you are in  your 30’s they are almost depressing…..(will soon reach there in the next couple of years so will be able to write this with authority…!)

Anyways…no matter how old you grow….B’day’s are always special days……they are the day when you are officially the king/queen and everyone makes you feel special…

So today was my day….and I had a nice time….did not go to work….was  trekking in the hills of Matheran…..then went shopping (in spite of it being my b’day..….I did not shop too much!) and then of course the best part of the day were all the wishes from long lost friends and family….!

Thank you everyone who Met …Called….SMSed….Pinged… Scrapped me to today to wish me….you people (in that order of effectiveness!) totally made my day!

And for all those of you’ll who missed wishing me today….worry not…..you can still do that….. Belated wishes are valid for the next 364 days!

A Thousand Splendid Suns- Khaled Hosseini

😀 Finished yet another one……!! Not bad Eh! Another wonderful book…..For anybody who is actually following my blog is sure to think…what is with this girl….every review says that the book is lovely/wonderful/ great….well I guess I have just gotten lucky and picked up some good books…. Also  if the book is not so great..chances are bright that I would never finish it….and never write about it!

Enough of me…now about the book….:-) (Well If you are reading the blog..get used to reading about me….cause since I am my favorite person..I will have a tendency to write about me!)

A Thousand Splendid Suns is about two women Mariam Jo (I wonder what Jo means) and Laila Jo their lives in Afghanistan.

The book spans a period of fifty years and it gives a vivid picture of the different era’s of Afghanistan…..The Russian Rule…The Mujahedin …The Taliban and then the Americans…..they all ruled Afghanistan and the country was perpetually in war…first to get independence from the Russian communist rule…then infighting between Mujahedin lords…then the dreadful Taliban rule and the atrocities on women…and finally the American war on Afghanistan…

Read the book and you will experience the war and the devastation through the eyes of Mariam and Laila…..you can actually feel their pain…their helplessness….their despair…..

The book is divided into four parts…..

It starts with Mariam….and the first part is all about Marriam and her life…….Marraim is born a ‘harami’  (the book uses this word multiple times to don’t get scandalized basically she is born out of wedlock). She lives with her mother in a small town in Heart in Afghanistan…..her mother commits suicide when she is fifteen…her father and step mothers force her to married to a 40 year old man Rasheed and pack her off the to Kabul….

Part Two is about Laila….and her family…….Lila is born as a third child to a modern educated family in Kabul in Mariam’s neighborhood…she lives there for 15 years but never cross paths until one fateful day….

Part Three…..is about Mariam and Laila together….and it is heart wrenching……it is about war…the Taliban….despair…..helplessness….

And last part is about Laila without Marriam in present day Afghanistan….

Although it is a work of fiction….it is inspired from the truth….Marriam and Lila would be a fiction of Khalid’s imagination….but I am sure people like this exist and have similar gruesome stories to share …

What hit me most about the narration was that it is about Afghanistan in the eighties….nintes…it is a period I have lived through in a country not so far from Afghanistan and I have lived such a different life from the two protagonists in the book….I have been so lucky….Laila would be approximately the same age as me …..but our lives have been so very different….I feel so fortunate and lucky….What is it…Krama….?

I cant even imagine life in Taliban era…..I cant imagine not being allowed to step out of the house  without being accompanied by a man…..being trashed if you are seen alone…..we take our freedom and independence for granted….

Laila lived a liberal life….she went to school….had a liberal family…..even had a boyfriend….and then suddenly….everything changed….one fine day…..rather one dark day….everything was over……scary…..is’nt it…..and you know what….it can happen to you….

War can be crazy…

Imagine….you sitting safely in your house and suddenly…. ‘BOOM’… comes a rocket from the sky and your neighbors house disappears….you live in constant fear that you would be next…and ‘BOOM’…one day your greatest fears come true….and everything you know is over….but you survive to tell the tale…

You know what….this is happening….at this very moment….The war at Gaza…..people are suffering….loosing everything they have…..but we don’t really care…..we are so wrapped up in our own petty issues and our imagined problems….

A book like Thousand Splendid Suns …just gives a different perspective to life…..it is  definitely worth a read….I personally liked it better than ‘Kite Runner’ ….maybe cause it shows Afghanistan from a woman’s eyes….

MTV Rodies…What is wrong with them!!??

I like MTV Rodies….have been a mid session follower across all the previous sessions…..and this time I decided to catch up with Rodies from the very beginning…For the first time I saw the auditions and they were interesting…Raghu and Rajiv were fundoo, a little irritating but overall entertaining and made me feel…. “I wanna be on the hot seat and give it back to them….!”

Like all other viewers I was looking forward to the Journey to start….and it did…and Oh What a disappointment it has been so far…..First episode…..half the people are selected randomly to be safe, the other half are made to  do a task and then more than half are unceremoniously thrown out….WTH! Some of the people who were thrown out may just have proved to be interesting…especially one chick who sounded like she was from the North East….her audition was quite good and I was looking forward to see her in the show….but Boom..first episode she is out…..we did not even get to figure out what her name is!

Anyways….I guess they could not take so many people on the journey……never mind…..let see  the second episode….And  I partly saw today….what lousy tasks…..!!!!

The girls were asked some weird  questions in Hindi (Like what is internet called in Hindi…..!! God knows…I watched the episode and yet I don’t know) and if they answered wrong….the boys would get hit with a rod in between their legs….WTF….it was quite gross and  so not funny to watch…the poor guys were in pain….Do the MTV  Rodies producers think it is funny and entertaining to see people being hit on the balls in their underpants???  Please think again….

It was quite  a pathetic  task… non adventurous…..non entertaining… quite silly…..and so not happening….I hope they pull up their socks and come up with better tasks for future episodes!

What did you guys out there think about the episode and he task….?

Photo Hunt 09

Went for an interesting Rotaract project last Sunday organized by Rotaract Club of Mumbai Ghatkopar called the “Photo Hunt 09”…

Project Concept…

  • Each Team(2-4 participants) were given a set of 120 situations of which they have click photographs
  • Teams were given a time of 3 hours.
  • All photographs were suppose to have at least one participant wearing the AIDS red ribbon ( Brilliant idea to ensure that old photographs were not submitted)
  • Teams were not allowed to split.(Photo’s from only 1 camera would be checked!)
  • There were points assigned to each situation….you get bonus points if you merge three or more situations in one picture
  • The team that gets the highest number of points wins!

Simple eh! Yup! The rules were simple and well thought of….but the actual meat of the game were the “120 clues/tasks” to be photographed!!

Some Random Sample clues..

Sit on a Dog….Do Yogaasan on a Bus Stop….Picture of a man with Red Pants!….Kissing a condom machine…..doing the titanic pose in a public toilet…Driving a rickshaw….Riding a tricycle….Triple Seat on a Bicycle….On the top of a truck….with your passport and voting card…With foam on your head..riding on a horse…..Doing pull ups in the ladies compartment of the train…milking a cow…etc etc etc….you get the drift.. J …..120 diverse fundoo tasks…entire Mumbai at your disposal…..but just 180 minutes…!!

Boy was it fun or what!!  We managed to get only about 50 of the 120 tasks done….and obviously we lost…..not sure how many tasks the winning team completed….not sure what the prizes were…(since we knew we were not winning we did not sit till the end!) But we had a ball…and that’s all that matters!!

Lesson Learn’t : – Don’t strategize too much….just do it…(in this case just click)….next time you take part….quickly read the clues and run!! If you see a potential picture…just click…you will never get time to come back to the place and click again!!

Can these lessons be translated to life at large….? I think yes it can…..

Don’t strategize too much….Life is short….Just Do it……!

PS- I will put up some of the snaps that we took…if and when I get them from the camera owner of my team…

Bottom lineThe Verdict: – Photo Hunt 09 was fun…and Rotaract Rocks…if you are between 18 to 30 and have never been a part of Rotaract….boy….you are missing something….go find your nearest Rotaract Club!!

Rab Ne Bana De Jodi

I know it is a little late to write a review for this movie now….but believe it or not…..in spite of being a ShahRuk Khan fan….(well not a fan really…..but just like Shahruk Khan type of movies) I just saw it today morning!!

And despite what a lot of people have had to say about the movie….I quite like it…it was cute…and not more unrealistic than all the other movies in the genere…(Read they are quite believable if you look at it from my eyes!)

So what was the movie about..? Now I don’t really want to write the plot….cause it sounds quite stupid…..Suri and Taani are married…Suri is a very booring middle class man….Taani is not in love with him….Suri gets a make over and becomes Raj they participates in a dance competition …Taani falls in love with Raj and does not even realize it is her husband…ya I know it sounds stupid an unrealistic…and that is the reason I did not watch the movie all this time…but it is really not all that bad….it is done well…

So what did I like about the movie……well…I think I liked it cause it was about love!!

Suri is so cute and so much in love with Taani….Raj is also quite cute…and so over the top…trying to hard to please…he is cutely irritating..:-D (now you need to see the movie to know what cutely irritating means!)

I quite liked the songs in the movie…..they sound much better now after watching the movie.. “Ek Step Aage Aage”…sounded quite silly before I saw the movie….but not in context it is quite nice!

“Tujhme Rab Dikta hai…yaara mein kya karo”….THE SONG of the movie….:-)“When you are in love….you will see God(Rab) in the person….and like all the Yash Raj movie……the underling theme of the movie is that marriages/love stories are made in heaven and written by God! J I guess that is what I liked about the movie!

I am basically quite a sucker for the Yash Raj mushy candy floss movies….they make it for people like me…who like to believe in love!
