Fluttering/ Twitching Eyes…

My eyes have been twitching and fluttering last few days….sometimes the right one….and lately the left one….did some quick Google search to see why it happens and here is what I got….from Yahoo Answers

Causes

Fatigue or lack of sleep
Over consumption of caffeine
Physical or emotional stress
Anxiety or phobias
Brain damage or other neurological disorders
Associated with temper tantrums (especially in children)
Eye stress associated with extended viewing of the computer screen
Epilepsy

Umm…the most likely reason seems to be….too much computer screen……anxiety/stressed ( I really don’t know what I am anxious/ stressed about….but there other other symptoms as well….maybe I need to write to figure out what is causing stress)

Ah..and another thing..which I don’t see in this list……I think I need specks….that just be the
actual reason

Consult a doctor if –

Twitches that cause your eyelids to completely close
Experience redness, swelling, or discharge from the eye
Experience sensitivity to light or vision is blurred
Twitching extends from the eye to other parts of the face
Twitches are uncomfortable or painful
Twitches increase in frequency and intensity
Twitches do not disappear within a 7 day week
Twitches are accompanied by a fever

None of the above are applicable…. but it is just a little irritating! so I guess I don’t need to see a doc yet…my baby doc at home would be enough for the time being…

Here are some  recommended home remedies to try

hot baths
cold compresses
warm compresses
eye drops
flushing eyes with water

Bought rose water to put in the eyes…..will try to put cucumber on the eyes…it is normally very relaxing….and will also try other recommended remedies…..and will try and stay away from the comp… so now you know why there may not be blogs from me for sometime….(may not succeed….and I may just come back online soon to write…..)

Till then…..Chow……..may my twitching eyes get back to normal soon!!

Feeling Blue….

Just one of those days when you feel kind of sad and lonely…….you may  have lot of friends…..but don’t really feel like talking to anyone….and cause you don’t  really feel like talking to anyone so feel even more lonely……vicious cycle indeed…..

I don’t know if this has happens to other people……but it happens to me quite a few times ..….I feel like talking to someone…..I feel like I want to be around people and have a meaningful conversation…..and just be myself……but I look at the phone book in my cell phone and there is not a single person I feel like talking to…..:-( and then I think to myself…..what is with me….why is it that I feel this void when I have such wonderful people around…the perfect job… ..the perfect life!!

Its like water water all around and not a drop to drink….:-(

Well life is not bad actually…..and I have no right to feel blue…..again I don’t know if anyone else feels this….very often I feel that I don’t have the ‘right’ to feel ‘sad’…..cause my life is so perfect compared to all those other people  out there who don’t have families…may not have food….may be staying in war torn regions….may be ill…..you know what I mean…..like what am I cribbing or feeling sad about….I don’t have anyone I feel like talking to…come on…that is not even a valid reason!!

So I get up….and DECIDE….I don’t want to feel ‘blue’ any more…..smile…..and start feeling happy again!!

Try it….act happy….and you  start to feel happy……it does get a little tiring to act happy at times….but it is less tiring than being sad!!

Cheers!!

S

PS : Btw….one more very well kept secret…  which works when you are feeling sad……Go to the bathroom…lock the door and …Cry….it helps!! J

Delhi 6 –Absolutely Disastrous…!!

Firstly Delhi 6 is  a misnomer for the movie….it should have been called… “Kaala Bandar”……yes friends…that is what the movie is about….A Kaala Bandar…..and had they named it right I am sure a lot of people would be put off by the name and not bother to watch it for 3 hours!

Now I did go for a movie in the first week trusting Rajiv Masand’s review on the movie…..he gave it 3 stars and quite a decent review only to realize that IBN/TV 18 seem to be some sort of partners for the movie…..every time they wanted to show Indian news as a part of the narrative (which was a lot!) it was one of the TV 18 channels that were featured….and hence I guess Rajiv Masand may have been forced to give a decent review….Rajiv…I am as disappointed with you as I am with the movie….I used to trust his reviews!!

Now for the movie….why was it such a disappointment….and what is Kaala Bandar…..!

I don’t know if you’ll remember there was some bullshit news a few years which was capitalized by channels like Aaaj Tak …IBN 7 about a monkey man who is robbing people and generally causing a chaos and there are multiple theories on what is this big monkey…is it an animal…is it a man….is it a machine……many speculations fueled by IBN 7 type of channels…..the kind of news also which you would switch channels and not watch…..well dear friends….this movie is just about that…..it is goes on for three hours and there is not channel to change…!!

It is about how this story of the Monkey Man spreads in Chandni Chowk..(Delhi 6)…and the chaos and the communal riots it creates….

Sonam barely has much of a role in the movie….Abhisek is irritating with his put on accent…..he looks fat and old in the movie…..the romance is quite non-existent….the songs are very brief in the movie….and are placed there for the heck of it…they do not really add to the story or take the story ahead…everyone is so over the top….that it is bad….

BTW….did you know ‘MaskAli’ from the very hum-able song of the same name is the name of an unimportant pigeon who has no role as such to play in the movie!!

What were they thinking when they made this movie…..is it really the same director who made Rang De Basanti…..or I guess the credit for Rang De should be given to Aamir Khan and not to Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra!!!

Overall very avoidable movie…..and don’t trust Rajeev Masand’s review…..cross check…..

Writing Toast Master Speeches!!

For anyone who has been a part of the toastmaster club would know what I mean when I say it is such a pain to think of a topic and write a speech…….the last speech I gave was on this blog of mine…..it was something that I wrote on the last minute and it was quite a disaster…..it was a disaster…cause it was booring…..I was bored speaking….so I am sure my listeners were bored listening…well it was not so bad…..you can read it on this link!  Reflections of a Restless Princess.

Anyways.,..that was way back in October…so that was when I gave my last speech….and I have avoided giving a prepared speech post that with a new excuse to evey time…and now the next meeting is this week…unless I can come up with a brand new excuse….I will have to give a speech!

I have a topic in mind…. “ Just Ask” ….but now I have to make a 5-7 minute story around these two words….now that should not be very difficult……but lets see if I manage to get something!

I am going to use this space as a scratch pad….and try and get my thinking in order….blogging always helps me to get my thoughts in place….and any feedback/idea’s from anyone reading this scratch pad would be most welcome!!

So what is “Just Ask” …..this is something that I read in this really nice book called  “The Last Lecture” by Randy Pauch ( A book review on this book is pending on my blog) and is has stuck with me among other things….

The basic funda is…if you want something  “Just Ask” chances are you will get it….

Simple is’nt it!

My extended logic is that even if you don’t get it….at least you know you have tried!!

Simple example…..we were going for an office toastmasters picnic today…..I and a couple of people who stay in the same area were suppose to be the first ones to board the bus…..

Starting point:  “Office”..now office is close to home……but it is about a 20-30 minute drive….(yeah Bombay that is considered very close) I asked my) colleagues who were boarding the bus with me….let us try and get the starting point changed to something more convenient….they were a little hesitant…who will talk to the organizers…..the rule (WTH…rules are meant to be broken!) is we will start from the office premise….etc etc….I though of the “Just ask” principle and picked the phone and called our club president….and told him… Boss..can we start from location X instead of office…and he was like sure….just give me the address!! It was as simple as that…..all it required was me to pick the phone and ask….the six other people who also would have preferred the bus start from location X instead of office….did not want to risk  asking for it…

I was discussing this principle of “Just Ask” with people at work….and told them this story of the bus pick up spot…..they gave a “Gender Angle”….if it was a guy who had asked for a change it would not have been so easy….you girls have it easy….WTH!! I most defiantly don’t agree….I think it is more the ‘way’ of asking rather than ‘the gender’ of the person who is asking……Now girls are in general sweeter and would maybe smile and ask…..this may give them an advantage…but guys can smile and be sweet  and nice too….that is not impossible! (Or is it boys!?)

I agree  to a certain extent…‘who’ is also important….but only to determine if  I like the person or not….gender  may not have a role to play……but I have an all boys team at work….and I was out numbered and I backed off and said whatever!!

Now gender aside….why is it that people avoid asking…? What keeps us back from asking for something that we think we want….?  I think It is the fear of rejection…..we are afraid that we will not get what we want even if we ask……Yes chances are that we may not get what we want even if we muster the courage to ask…..but if you don’t ask…..you will most definitely not get it!!….

Well you may just….if someone can read you mind….or someone else is the group “asks” like I did in the bus pick up spot story!!

So logically we should ask….although there are chances of rejection of our humble request….but if we don’t ask….odds that we don’t get what we want are much higher….

I am sure although everyone already knew this somewhere  at the bottom of your heart….and I have reinforced the point…so it is up in your top memory recall…..We would STILL be hesitant to “ask” for ….even though “logically” we should….this is because… “EGO” comes into the way…and when “EGO” walks into the picture…”LOGIC” normally walks out….

If we ask for something we want…and we don’t get it….we are “hurt” …. “feel insulted”… “get upset”….“get angry”…  “withdraw”……It basically hurts our ‘ego’ and our self image….“I asked for this….how could he/she not give it to me….” Whereas if you don’t ask….you at least your ‘Ego’ have a way out…. “ If I asked…I would have got it…anyways this is not important…it does not really matter” etc etc

When it comes to matters of the heart….this situation gets even more tricky…. “To ask or not to ask”……If you ask someone out…and the answer is not favorable…..then things are a mess….you start avoiding the person..or the person starts avoiding you…erstwhile normal conversations become uncomfortable….etc etc etc

If you don’t ‘ask’…you’ll never know…..you may live with that regret all your life….I should have just asked…..or you may reconcile to ‘fate’ and say…it was not meant to be…We Indians have this tendency to blame “fate” for our actions or lack of actions…and we shift responsibility to this external entity….

I have had my share of being on all sides of the fence….I have asked…not asked…blamed fate….regretted asking….regretted not asking…..I have been there done that….but I still don’t know what to do….and I don’t think I ever will!!

But Bottom Line…..If you want something….” JUST ASK”

Let LOGIC rule and EGO take a back seat…..!!

Plastic Power

‘Plastic Power’….sounds like a something  to do with to credit cards on the first look….but that is not what I am writing about here….This is inspired from an article I read in Fortune today afternoon which I thought was quite interesting….

‘Plastic Power’ refers   a new lightweight, flexible, and cheap material that converts indoor and outdoor light into electricity developed by a  US based company Konarka

It is like a solar panel that rolls up like camera film… interesting eh! In a few years, Rick Hess the CEO says, Konarka will have perfected a translucent version of its product that could be built into the windows of skyscrapers, generating enough power to run whole buildings!!

How does it work : It falls under what is called the “Thin-film solar technology” . The film rolls off a converted printing press that used to belong to Polaroid. It prints a secret plastic ink onto rolls of thin film. As it absorbs light, the polymer ink emits electrons, producing electricity!

The Positives:

  • It is much cheper than traditional silicon panels
  • It is flexible so can be moulded around anything

The Negatives

  • Not nearly as efficient or durable as traditional silicon panels. (Konarka’s cells convert about 6% of the light that hits them into electricity, whereas silicon solar panels typically are 16% to 20% efficient.)
  • Power Plastic lasts only about five years as opposed to more than 30 with silicon panels

But neat..is’nt it!??!!….

Outliers-The Story of Success – Malcolm Gladwell

This is one wonderful book…..and…it is one difficult task to describe what this book is about….

‘The Story of Success’…is what the tag of the book read…..but it is that and much more….it is also the story of failure…..it is the story of people outside of the ‘normal’ range…The Outliers….

So what makes them outliers….?

Malcom Gladwell looks at all successful hockey players of all times in Canada…and spots a pattern….a majority of them are born in the months of Jan/Feb/March……so a significant majority are… Aquarian… Pisceans…. and Aires……(He lists names/B’days for the reader to examine!) what is it…? Lucky stars…..?

Well no my friends…he is not propagating astrology….he is just stating facts and then finding a logic to explain it…..

So here goes the logic…!

January 1st  is the cut off date for people to join a the hockey team in Canaidian schools….so  a 10 year old child born close to the cut off date would be bigger than his peers born in December…..and since he is bigger…chances are that he would be stronger/faster/better at the game of hockey…and hence he would be selected for the junior hockey team…since he is on the team he would get more practice and better training than his counter parts born in December…and hence my dear friends….once he grows up…he would be a successful player in the Canadian hockey team!!

Interesting eh!

The book is full of such interesting observations and even more interesting conclusions………….

Why does Korean Air have a disastrous ‘loss’ rate of 4.79 per  million departures during the period of 1988 to 1999 as compared to 0.27 per million departures for United Airlines in the same period…?? Almost seventeen times higher!!….Read the book to know the logic….it is fascinating….

Success is about being at the right place at the right time with the right amount of experience under your belt…10 thousand hours….is what Malcolm claims is required to be really really successful at anything you do….it could be anything…playing music….(Beatles)….Coding ( Bill Gates)….anything and everything…..so if you really really want to be good at something…..try to get 10 thousand hours of practice…and you will definitely be good….but to get this 10,thousand hours of practice…you have to love what you are doing…and be lucky to be at the ‘right’ place to get the opportunity to get the practice…

He describes the lives of many successful people….and illustrates how they were lucky enough to get the right exposure just like the hockey team kids…!

Read it…it sure makes an interesting Reading!

Baby Doctor Ban Gaya!!

My baby bro is officially a Doctor now……..the baby doctor has now become a qualified doctor..however he will still remain the baby doctor in my eyes for sometime to come!!

The result declaration was a big drama…..results got declared last Wednesday on the 10th of Feb…baby doctor’s result… “WITHHELD!!”….WTF….why is the result not declared!!???

Reason  on website: ‘Discrepancy in internal assessment marks’….WTF!!?? What discrepancy….and we tried to come up with potential stories…maybe the signature did not match on the internal assessment sheet…maybe….he put his old signature…maybe..maybe…..maybe…..god know….what discrepancy !!??!!

The bigger problem….the role number before him…and the role number after him…..both flunked the Gynac practices…..WTF!! They are intelligent students…..but the Gynac external….seemed to have screwed the entire batch….and flunked so many people…..baby doc’s pracs were so so…..the normal questions were answered….the arbid questions were not…..so was he gonna flunk the Gynac pracs!!??! Was he going to flunk an exam for the first time in his life….that too the ‘final’ exam of the ‘final’ year of medicine!!!??

Looking at the trend anything seemed possible…..our fingers were crossed….anyways….fail to fail…big deal…..we all started looking at the positive side of it…..well yes…there can be a positive side to your result being withheld….and there can be a positive side of flunking an exam!

H e was like…..in case I fail…I get time to mentally prepare for it…in case I fail…I get a longer vacation….even if I fail…it does not affect chances of doing a post graduation…..so there is go…the worse case was also not too bad…..

And with all these stories…and the resolve to get to college next day and sort out this mess…..we go to sleep…..

Next day in college : Reason for Internal assessment discrepancy…..overwriting by the college staff on the marks they sent out to the university!! WTF!

Solution : Send a fax to the university with the corrected sheet and problem solved…..simple eh!! But

But nothing happened (with sarkari colleges and universities…..nothing is simple!) ….Thursday….Friday….Saturday…in spite of numerous meetings with the to the college staff….dean…professors…. ‘sifarish’(influence) to people at the top…nothing really happened….college sent the required fax on Friday….we waited for the result all Saturday……….but no result….

Monday the same process repeated itself…….the Maharastra University of Health Sciences claimed that they have not received the fax from college….WTF!!! The fax was sent again….and the result was finally declared online……siiggghhhhhhhhhh….what a relief……the suspense is over…..and it is a happy ending….he passed as usual with flying colors and got a 66%!!!

All is well that ends well….I am sure there was many a learning in this…..His Excellency at least entertained the idea that he may fail…and I am sure he did get humbled by it…..we were thrilled with the result and valued it so much more…..which otherwise may not have been the case….we realized the tension others would have faced over the years when their results get withheld ( apparently this  happens to a few students every year….but if it does not affect you directly…you don’t really care!) We got more spiritually aligned over the last few days ( at least Mom and me…I managed to do a 3h 20 min Daimaku for the first time!) ….always happens when things are not so smooth….

Anyways….All is well that ends well……and anyways…..Everything happens for a reason and it all for the best!!
