Holi Hai!!!

What fun….Holi is one of my favorite festivals…..actually I think I just LOVE all festivals in general…….This year was super duper fun…..missed my baby brother though but there was lot of other family around to compensate!

We started discussion on holi a week back…..trying to plan to do something with office junta….but that did not work….:-(

There was a potential plan to go to Khandala to celebrate holi cause some family friends were going there…..but that did not work….:-(

Finally we decided to go to the gymkhana party……we walked in….there was loud bollywood music  (my kind of music..;-)!)……and NO ONE…in the whole damn place!! I had half a mind of walking off and going back to the compound and playing holi with the water pipe…..but we were like 10 of us…so  we started off the party…..grabbed to water pipe…..and wet everyone!!

And then there was no stopping us……dancing……color….a few breezers….lots of water…..loooots of dancing….little bit of colour! We had a blast…..

Ofcourse as the time passed…people started coming in and what started as a private party did not stay that way for too long…..but Mumbai rocks…..people don’t misbehave…no putting color on people you don’t know etc….!

We ended the party with a nice hot water bath at home and  some very yummy food…..

But now suffering from the after effects….:-) dancing  with full josh for 2 hours in the rain……can be very very tiring……with the adrenalin rush at that time…you don’t realize…..but once you sit down…..u cant get up!! I am still slightly deaf with all the music and maybe the water that got into my ear……hope it is not permanent damage!

Family rocks…..festivals rock….and celebrating festivals with family you like is the best thing possible!!

HAPPY HOLI!!! 🙂

Hope for many more like this……

Making Dal Ki Roti!

I have always seen Dal ka Roti being made…and this Sunday  I made it for myself…..and it was soooo easy….

Mix the leftover dal (preferably use yellow dal)  with the aata (wheat flour)… put some salt and chillies (red chillies and green chillies)…cut onions finely and mix with the aaata and you are ready to go.

Now make paratha….remember to put ghee in it…that makes it all the more tasty!!

Another little thing that I did wrong…so warning you’ll…so you don’t make the same mistake…..ensure that your paratha is nice and thick….if you make it too thin…it will become very crisp…and then not taste as good!!

Happy making and eating Dal ka Paratha’s…!! Other Paratha recipes some other time…my mom is a pro is making paratha’s so I know a whole lot of recipes!!!

Obituary to my Beloved- Late Mr Nokia 3250

Finally buried my old but very loyal Nokia 3250 😦

My 3250 was a good phone….one would need to twist his bottom to click pictures (now you know which model I am referring to). He was good for everything except talking and messaging (now who needs phones for menial tasks like that!)….great music….the loudspeaker was fantabulous…I did not have a deck in my car but Mr 3250 made an excellent replacement for a car deck….the camera was great….some of the pictures that my 3250 clicked  in the daylight were envied by the low end camera’s available in the market….3250 journeyed the world with me…..well ok….slight exaggeration….he just travelled to Singapore …. Hyderabad… Bangalore… Lonavala… Goa…Matheran…. Lonavala…. Mahabheleshwar….Lonavala…Karjat…Lonavala…etc etc ….( ya since I have shifted to this side of town…..Lonavala has become like a regular destination….people actually call me on weekends and as me if I am in Mumbai or Lonavala!)

Age was catching up with 3250 he was getting tired with all the travel…. He was in shambles for ages now….the key pad numbers were wiped out…the cover was fractured  and was plastered together with cello-tape (despite changing the body twice!) The battery life was gone and would last only about an hour (despite getting a duplicate battery replaced) ….but I loved my phone….and did not want to give it up…..

Till one fine day…..about two months back on my way back from Goa…3250 though it had had enough of being dropped and ill-treated…and I guess the Goa sun and sand was too much for it to handle….it just died  right there in my hand….and would not come back on to life….emgercy treatment at the Nokia repair shop eventually brought him back to life after a week….. but the incident shook me up…..how can I live without a phone  after all  ‘its not just a phone…its who we are!’  (guess this tag line from which phone!) and hence my quest for a new phone started!

After much research and discussion…I narrowed down on a Nokia Supernova 7610….features seemed nice…the phone looked good…the mirror finish was interesting…..great reviews from people using it…the Priyanka Chopra advt was nice….very relatable (ya…advts do matter….so  here is feedback anyone from the marketing world). …the perfect phone for me!

So I had my heart and mind set on the Graphite Grey Nokia 7610….! I had made up my mind….and I had told all my tech savvy well wishers (obviously all boys/men!) to stay way and not to try an influence my decision…cause I had finally actully made up my mind……

I spent 3 weeks looking for the Graphite Grey Nokia 7610…got the White every where I went ( and believe me I went to many places..mobile store…Cell One..Nokia Priority..Big Baazar etc etc)…..but the grey piece was just not available L

Finally one little shop in Alfa….had merewala “Graphite Grey” ( which he had to source from some other shop) and I was about to make the bill…..when the guy at the counter said….madame…why don’t you try Sony Erickson C510….. it is the exact same price…features are much better….and I don’t know what came over me….and I said…yes why not….if you are so sure this is a better phone…I will go for it….and I buried my Nokia 3250…and came home with the new Sony Erickson C510!!

All research…all discussions…everything down the drain……bough the phone on the word and recommendation of the guy across the counter…..Sales guys in Nokia….listen up….you’ll are loosing sales of die hard Nokia fans like me…..despite jazzy Priyanka Chopra advts…because of the guy behind the counter!!

Welcome  Ms Sony C510……to my world…..I stay loyal to my phone….and eventually fall in love with them….but drop them…throw them around…..so dear  Ms C510….I hope you are not very delicate and girly girly like you look and can withstand the pressures of being my phone like my beloved the late Mr Nokia 3250 did… you are going to have an interesting few years  ahead with me!

All the best Ms Sony Erickson C510….and Welcome aboard!!

Ps: For all you people who actually want to do a compare of the two phones….(I did it when I got home) here is the link!

Shooting of Oye! Its Friday…!

Farhan Aktakar….my namesake Shilpa Shetty and yours truly spend this Sunday afternoon shooting for the grand finale of Oye Its Friday!!

OyE!!

We were the unimportant audience….but we had a great time….even though Shilpa Shetty is not my hot  favorite…. (I am straight so that is understandable!) and Farhan is quite cute but he is SRK….the show was quite nice…..The live performances were the highlights….we got to see two of them. The first one was some firang chick…doing a solo dance…it was more like gymnastics than dance…..and she was super good….extremely flexible….you wonder if she has any bones in her body..she actually squeezed into a tiny box all by her self!! I don’t know if it will look as impressive when this is aired in TV….but it was truly wonderful to watch live!

The second performance was Sukvinder….with his group of dancers…Haulle Haulle…Jai Ho….the works….music and dance is always rocking…and so was this…

One of my friends actually took a video clip of the performance….so in case he is nice enough to share it with me…..I will link it to the blog….till then you can just imagine what it looked like!

Now for some secrets from back stage…J

1)      The show is not shot on Friday…!! (Well I am sure you already knew that!)

2)      The 1 hour show talks almost 3 hours to shoot….

3)      The set is air conditioned…(Thank God!)

4)      There are two stages opposite each other….one for the chat show….and the other for the performances. The audiences sits in between on backless stools which can be turned around to see either stage as the case may be… ( I had a back ache all Monday sitting on the stool!)

5)      The audience are paid to sit there per shoot….it ranges from 100 bucks for the boys to 900 bucks for girls with short skirts per day! ( Well…we did not get paid…we were NDTV guests)

6)      Farhan uses a tele -prompter and all the faltu jokes are written by some dude called Kiran…..so there is nothing spontaneous about the show….infact some of the guest cues are also on the tele-prompter!

7)      Even the audience questions are made up and pre-decided!!

8)   Only some of the performances are live and some are recording shown on the big screen shown to the guests!

9)      While watching the show live…the performances are more fun than the chat show which is all made up…..although he few times I have watched the episode on TV I was of a diametrically opposite opinion

So that was Oye! Its Friday! Exposed for you! Do watch the episode with Shilpa Shetty….supose to be the grand finale for this season…for those of you who know me…try and spot me in the audiences!!!

Baby Doctor Ban Gaya!!

My baby bro is officially a Doctor now……..the baby doctor has now become a qualified doctor..however he will still remain the baby doctor in my eyes for sometime to come!!

The result declaration was a big drama…..results got declared last Wednesday on the 10th of Feb…baby doctor’s result… “WITHHELD!!”….WTF….why is the result not declared!!???

Reason  on website: ‘Discrepancy in internal assessment marks’….WTF!!?? What discrepancy….and we tried to come up with potential stories…maybe the signature did not match on the internal assessment sheet…maybe….he put his old signature…maybe..maybe…..maybe…..god know….what discrepancy !!??!!

The bigger problem….the role number before him…and the role number after him…..both flunked the Gynac practices…..WTF!! They are intelligent students…..but the Gynac external….seemed to have screwed the entire batch….and flunked so many people…..baby doc’s pracs were so so…..the normal questions were answered….the arbid questions were not…..so was he gonna flunk the Gynac pracs!!??! Was he going to flunk an exam for the first time in his life….that too the ‘final’ exam of the ‘final’ year of medicine!!!??

Looking at the trend anything seemed possible…..our fingers were crossed….anyways….fail to fail…big deal…..we all started looking at the positive side of it…..well yes…there can be a positive side to your result being withheld….and there can be a positive side of flunking an exam!

H e was like…..in case I fail…I get time to mentally prepare for it…in case I fail…I get a longer vacation….even if I fail…it does not affect chances of doing a post graduation…..so there is go…the worse case was also not too bad…..

And with all these stories…and the resolve to get to college next day and sort out this mess…..we go to sleep…..

Next day in college : Reason for Internal assessment discrepancy…..overwriting by the college staff on the marks they sent out to the university!! WTF!

Solution : Send a fax to the university with the corrected sheet and problem solved…..simple eh!! But

But nothing happened (with sarkari colleges and universities…..nothing is simple!) ….Thursday….Friday….Saturday…in spite of numerous meetings with the to the college staff….dean…professors…. ‘sifarish’(influence) to people at the top…nothing really happened….college sent the required fax on Friday….we waited for the result all Saturday……….but no result….

Monday the same process repeated itself…….the Maharastra University of Health Sciences claimed that they have not received the fax from college….WTF!!! The fax was sent again….and the result was finally declared online……siiggghhhhhhhhhh….what a relief……the suspense is over…..and it is a happy ending….he passed as usual with flying colors and got a 66%!!!

All is well that ends well….I am sure there was many a learning in this…..His Excellency at least entertained the idea that he may fail…and I am sure he did get humbled by it…..we were thrilled with the result and valued it so much more…..which otherwise may not have been the case….we realized the tension others would have faced over the years when their results get withheld ( apparently this  happens to a few students every year….but if it does not affect you directly…you don’t really care!) We got more spiritually aligned over the last few days ( at least Mom and me…I managed to do a 3h 20 min Daimaku for the first time!) ….always happens when things are not so smooth….

Anyways….All is well that ends well……and anyways…..Everything happens for a reason and it all for the best!!

Photo Hunt 09

Went for an interesting Rotaract project last Sunday organized by Rotaract Club of Mumbai Ghatkopar called the “Photo Hunt 09”…

Project Concept…

  • Each Team(2-4 participants) were given a set of 120 situations of which they have click photographs
  • Teams were given a time of 3 hours.
  • All photographs were suppose to have at least one participant wearing the AIDS red ribbon ( Brilliant idea to ensure that old photographs were not submitted)
  • Teams were not allowed to split.(Photo’s from only 1 camera would be checked!)
  • There were points assigned to each situation….you get bonus points if you merge three or more situations in one picture
  • The team that gets the highest number of points wins!

Simple eh! Yup! The rules were simple and well thought of….but the actual meat of the game were the “120 clues/tasks” to be photographed!!

Some Random Sample clues..

Sit on a Dog….Do Yogaasan on a Bus Stop….Picture of a man with Red Pants!….Kissing a condom machine…..doing the titanic pose in a public toilet…Driving a rickshaw….Riding a tricycle….Triple Seat on a Bicycle….On the top of a truck….with your passport and voting card…With foam on your head..riding on a horse…..Doing pull ups in the ladies compartment of the train…milking a cow…etc etc etc….you get the drift.. J …..120 diverse fundoo tasks…entire Mumbai at your disposal…..but just 180 minutes…!!

Boy was it fun or what!!  We managed to get only about 50 of the 120 tasks done….and obviously we lost…..not sure how many tasks the winning team completed….not sure what the prizes were…(since we knew we were not winning we did not sit till the end!) But we had a ball…and that’s all that matters!!

Lesson Learn’t : – Don’t strategize too much….just do it…(in this case just click)….next time you take part….quickly read the clues and run!! If you see a potential picture…just click…you will never get time to come back to the place and click again!!

Can these lessons be translated to life at large….? I think yes it can…..

Don’t strategize too much….Life is short….Just Do it……!

PS- I will put up some of the snaps that we took…if and when I get them from the camera owner of my team…

Bottom lineThe Verdict: – Photo Hunt 09 was fun…and Rotaract Rocks…if you are between 18 to 30 and have never been a part of Rotaract….boy….you are missing something….go find your nearest Rotaract Club!!

Can ‘I’ Fight Terrorism??

I don’t feel like writing these days 😦 maybe it is the impact of the Mumbai Firining….everything seems so insignificant….I feel like such an insignificant human being incapable of having any power to bring any change…I believe and know that it is all in the head…and you are as significant and powerful as you think you are……and its the thought process that needs to change….

But as of now everything seems so negative…the government seems incapable…the terrorists all powerful…..the army/NSG etc seemed to take forever to get things under control…the media and the socialites just seems to be making noise and nothing is going to come out of it….and this can very easily happen again….and I am quite powerless….

Reading the papers and the news is so depressing…but at the same time it is addictive…..I hate it… I feel angry/sad when you read/watch it…but still I am are compelled to read and watch…

So why are things seeming to negative….? And What can be done about it….Can me an indivisual do anything at all…? Will all these peace rallies, lighting candles etc help…I personally think it is just a publicity stunt….

But how can I contribute as an  individual…and can I make a difference as one person at all?

Some Points to Ponder and Take Action

1)  Follow the security rules however insignificant.. illogical…nonsensical they may be…

2) Check the security personal if they are not following the protocol

3) Challenge a security protocol that seems in adequate.

These are somethings I have done and I am planning to do in the future…

While parking at malls I normally grumble at the security check post and when they want to check my car…I often have some smart ass comments to pass like “come on….do I look like a terrorist….do you think I am carrying a bomb or a dead body in the dickey….why are you wasting your time etc…

I PROMISE NOT to do this again…

The other day we were driving into the parking lot of a mall and the security guards checked the under the car with the mirror and did not open the dickey ..I actually stopped him and told him…please check the dickey….it is part of the protocol…..

At work I always crib while having to walk through metal detectors and very often do not walk through them…..cause it seems quite useless … they seem to always beep and no one bothers to check…well this is one of those useless rules…but I promise to follow them and walk through the metal detector..

But can I do more than that?

I think the security procedures at work are very inadequate… bags are  not actually checked? Cars are not checked? Should I challenge the procedure and ensure it is more robust…Or is it too much trouble….office is a safe place…..but then Taj and Trident were also very safe before 26/11…

All it would take is to drop a mail to the admin head…(he has become a friend of mine because of all the ‘security’ rules I have broken so far..)

Please notice this post was all about ME and I and not and not about…WE…..THEM.POLITICIANS..

It is about YOU as an INIDIVISUAL and what YOU can do in your environment to make is slightly safer…

Yes the politicians are screwed up…and Pakistan maybe supporting terrorists and encouraging terrorism in India…but there are things YOU can do at an individual level….. The question is are you ready to do it?

If anyone as any idea’s on how you as an individual  can make your office/building/colony/bus stop/station safer….please share it with all…it may inspire someone to replicate your idea and take inspiration…
