Plastic Power

‘Plastic Power’….sounds like a something  to do with to credit cards on the first look….but that is not what I am writing about here….This is inspired from an article I read in Fortune today afternoon which I thought was quite interesting….

‘Plastic Power’ refers   a new lightweight, flexible, and cheap material that converts indoor and outdoor light into electricity developed by a  US based company Konarka

It is like a solar panel that rolls up like camera film… interesting eh! In a few years, Rick Hess the CEO says, Konarka will have perfected a translucent version of its product that could be built into the windows of skyscrapers, generating enough power to run whole buildings!!

How does it work : It falls under what is called the “Thin-film solar technology” . The film rolls off a converted printing press that used to belong to Polaroid. It prints a secret plastic ink onto rolls of thin film. As it absorbs light, the polymer ink emits electrons, producing electricity!

The Positives:

  • It is much cheper than traditional silicon panels
  • It is flexible so can be moulded around anything

The Negatives

  • Not nearly as efficient or durable as traditional silicon panels. (Konarka’s cells convert about 6% of the light that hits them into electricity, whereas silicon solar panels typically are 16% to 20% efficient.)
  • Power Plastic lasts only about five years as opposed to more than 30 with silicon panels

But neat..is’nt it!??!!….

Light Pollution…

Pollution is the Buzz word these days…..well I have heard of Air Pollution….Water Pollution…Noise Pollution….but Light Pollution!! Now that’s new….and that is exactly what I am going to write very briefly about today….

I went to the Library for my post lunch break and the cover of the National Geographic Magazine attracted my attention. And I got introduced to this new concept of “Light Pollution”

coverngm200811_us_sized_image

Now what is Light Pollution??

Light pollution—the luminous orange glow that haloes cities and suburbs”

Umm….ya….there is an orangish hallo over the city skies…you can see it when you look out of the window… and you can see it when your airplane passes at a low altitude over cities …but why is that pollution…? How does it harm anyone…??

The only apparent problem I could think of is  that you cant see the stars in the sky…. Now that is sad….cause the night sky lit with little stars is indeed very pretty and romantic….but that surely cannot be called pollution !

So why is this  glow of light termed as pollution…??

Apparently…bright night skies cause a lot of problems to nocturnal species…especially birds, reptiles and insects and a number of species are on the verse of extinction because of Light pollution!!

You can say…who cares…its insects and bird getting instinct after all…well check out this article from National Geographic  before you say that!

May Those Who Help The Most Win!

Came accross this intersting contest by Google called Project 10100 (pronounced “Project 10 to the 100th”) …I think it is a brilliant concept…! It is a is a call for ideas to change the world by helping as many people as possible!
I only wish I had a nice idea to put in! I dont…atleast not as of now…maybe I will think of something my 20th… Check out this link
Here’s how to join in.
1. Send google your idea by October 20th.Simply fill out the submission form giving us the gist of your idea. You can supplement your proposal with a 30-second video.
2. Voting on ideas begins on January 27th.Google will post a selection of one hundred ideas and ask you, the public, to choose twenty semi-finalists. Then an advisory board will select up to five final ideas. (Now I personally feel that is a long time they are going to take to short list the ideas!…But I am really looking forward to see this list!)

3.Google will help bring these ideas to life. They are committing $10 million to implement these projects, and our goal is to help as many people as possible. So remember, money may provide a jumpstart, but the idea is the thing.
Good luck, and may those who help the most win.
And If by any chance any of you’ll get to know of the project from this post and go on an participate….do leave a comment for me and let me know!
All the best!

Personality Plus Classification!

Florence Littauer classifies people into four personality types. I had attended a workshop on this a few months back and then I found a book written by her a few weeks back and it revived my interest. It is quite an accurate classification and now every time I look at someone …I think..ah he is a PC/PS…or a PM/PP…or eh….this was a typical PS statement..If nothing else it is fun to bucket people in different categories….and tell someone…you are a PC…and have them look at you in confusion! (This by the way would be a typical PS statement!)
Check out this link and do the test for yourself..and do remember to tell me the results!
